The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins head into their Week 3 game knowing the winning team will at least be tied for first place in the AFC East. If either side was looking for some extra motivation for the divisional clash, that's it.

Few players embody their team better than Mark Sanchez. The Jets quarterback looked like he was finally taking the next step forward in a huge win over the Buffalo Bills in the opener, but quickly returned to his usual form against the Pittsburgh Steelers.Jets vs Dolphins live stream

Sanchez must develop more consistency if the Jets want to become AFC playoff contenders. New York also needs to win games like the one on Sunday, which is against a rebuilding team with a rookie quarterback.

With that in mind, let's take a look at the vital information for the AFC East clash followed by a preview and prediction for one of Sunday's most intriguing early games.Jets vs Dolphins live stream

What's At Stake?

Aside from at least a share of the AFC East lead, this game will set the tone for what's going to happen over the next few weeks before each team's bye. A win should provide the confidence boost necessary to pace in the division.

It's probably more important for the Dolphins. Few people believed they were capable of challenging for a playoff spot, but a blowout victory over the Oakland Raiders and a favorable schedule has suddenly turned them into a team to watch.

Expectations are always high for the Jets and the team's impressive Week 1 only raised the bar even more. If they lose a second straight game on Sunday, the hope will quickly turn to anger among the team's diehard fans.

Fantasy Player to Watch: Reggie Bush

Bush has gone from fantasy afterthought to weekly starter in the span of one year. After posting his first career 1,000-yard rushing season, he's started the new campaign on a high note with over 300 total yards and two touchdowns in the first two games.

The biggest reason for his success is finally learning how to run effectively at the NFL level. Instead of trying to find a lane for the game-breaking play every down, Bush has learnt to accept those three and four-yard gains instead of taking a loss.

That has made him a more reliable player for the Dolphins and fantasy owners. He goes up against a Jets defense that allowed C.J. Spiller to run wild in Week 1, giving Bush a good chance to post big fantasy numbers on Sunday.

What They're Saying

Jets head coach Rex Ryan understands his team's passing game needs to improve after last week's poor showing, even though he did notice some positives, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post:

I’d like to see us at a higher percentage level. There’s a lot to do with it, not just Sanchez. We’ve got to catch the football better. Routes have got to be crisper. There’s a lot of things that go into it. But I was happy with the fact that we never turned the ball over. At times, I thought Mark really threw the ball well.

Ryan isn't the only one looking for better play at quarterback. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is seeking improvement from Ryan Tannehill as well

We hit a stretch there that he was a part of. He’s got to do better. There were a couple accuracy issues, a couple timing issues. There were one or two [plays] in the pocket … that he could have done a little better job, maybe slid his feet a little better.

Jets Key Player: Shonn Greene

The Jets continue to stand behind Greene as the starting running back, a position he has never proven capable of handling. He's averaging barely over four yards per carry for his career, and the number is even worse so far this season at 3.1 YPC.

Since he's unable to carry the offense and move the chains, it puts extra pressure on Sanchez to lead the way. When he's unable to produce a game like he did against the Bills in Week 1, it's a mighty struggle putting points on the board.

Greene has to start illustrating why he should remain in a starting role. The Jets don't have enough offensive weapons to survive in the playoff race without a good running game.

Dolphins Key Player: Ryan Tannehill

After an NFL debut Tannehill would probably rather forget, he bounced back pretty well in Week 2 with two touchdowns and no turnovers. The quarterback's progress will ultimately determine Miami's ceiling as a team this season.

Tannehill has all of the physical attributes a team looks for in a franchise QB, but he's still learning the finer points of the position after getting a late start under center in college. NFL defenses are going to take advantage of that inexperience, so there will be some frustrating games.

The Dolphins are likely to lean heavily on Bush to control the game, but need Tannehill to make a couple of key completions—especially on third down—to win. It's a tough ask against the Jets secondary.

Prediction

Jets 14, Dolphins 13
